Corn seedlings come up white

Q: A couple of my popcorn seedlings came up completely white! I’ve never seen that before. Albino corn? Can it survive without any green leaves?

A: It is not terribly unusual, particularly with older varieties or heirloom varieties of corn, to have a couple of albino seedlings pop up. Albinism it is generally caused by a genetic flaw.

Your seedlings won’t survive for long because they have no chlorophyll to convert sunshine into plant energy. It doesn’t look like you had many white seedlings so this is not something to worry much about.
