Cherokee County Master Gardeners presents “Gardeners’ Circle of Life”, State Conference, Georgia Master Gardener Association. This event is open to everyone, not only master gardeners and there will be only one conference this year.

April 20, registration begins at 8:00A.M., with many different events planned for the day. You can take a tour of the Funk Heritage Center, go for a guided tour through Burgess Arboretum, tour Gibbs Garden, participate in a hands-on craft workshop or meet and shop with our vendors. Then later in the evening you can join us at the Meet and Greet being able to interact with our speakers and members.

Monarchs Across Georgia is offering two separate week-long trips to Mexico in 2012: February 4-11 and February 11-18. What makes this trip to the monarch butterfly overwintering sites unique? Our itinerary includes visits to three monarch colonies. You’ll learn about local efforts to promote sustainable and environmentally sound economic activities. We’ll also visit a school near the monarch preserves to donate books purchased through our Mexico Book Project. The emphasis will be on exploring the natural history of the region, but the trip will also include many cultural and culinary delights. This trip is limited to sixteen participants and will be filled on a first come, first served basis. (The trip is open to all adults.) Georgia certified teachers my earn five professional learning units (5 PLUs. Three partial scholarships of $1,000 each are also available to Georgia educators. Apply for a scholarship by October 15, 2011.

How are those ‘fruit cocktail trees’ made featuring different fruit on the same tree or how to clone your favorite trees without having to root them? Grafting is a technique of tree propagation and formation that has been around for more than 2 millennia. Rob Hamilton will discuss grafting history and various uses, tools and techniques. The Gwinnett County Master Gardeners Monday, February 20th, 2012 Meeting at 7 PM will proudly feature garden expert, writer, radio, and television host Walter Reeves. A most respected southern garden guru, Walter Reeves is the author or co-author of nine books on gardening, hosts “The Lawn and Garden Show with Walter Reeves” Saturday mornings on Atlanta’s WSB radio and “Your Southern Garden” on Georgia Public Television. Walter also writes a weekly column for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, and distributes a bi-weekly e-mail newsletter.
Walter Reeves’ topic will be “Gardening For Everyone”.
The meeting will be held at: The Bethesda Senior Center, 225 Bethesda Church Road, Lawrenceville, GA 30044. 770.564.4680. On February 25 the Chicks in the City Symposium offers a full plate of essentials on backyard chickens with seven sessions taught by local experts highlighting how-tos from bees and chickens to community co-ops. This full day of workshops will enlighten the committed locavore and curious alike whileequipping guests with the resources needed to start an urban flock. Several new topics will be covered including baby chicks by the Georgia Gardener, Walter Reeves. The Symposium runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4pm on Saturday, February 25 and is held at the Oakhurst Church on 630 East Lake Drive in Decatur, GA.
