This work is the result of their work as photographers on the “Guide to the Natural Communities of Georgia” for the last seven years. The authors are Leslie Edwards, Kay Kirkman, and Jon Ambrose. 27th Annual South Metro Rose Society Rose Show

The South Metro Rose Society will be holding its 27th Annual Rose Show on May 19-20th at Church of Christ Fellowship Hall, 870 Redwine Road in Fayetteville. Local rose growers are invited to enter their roses for judging between 7-10 a.m. on the 19th. Members of the society will advise newcomers on entering their roses by calling the number below. The show is free to the public from 1-4 p.m. on both days to view, smell, and photograph hundreds of roses and rose arrangements. Rose bouquets will be sold and there will be an Information Table staffed by ARS Consulting Rosarians. Items to be raffled include jewelry from R. DuBose Jewelers, rose bushes of different varieties, Bionic gardening gloves, Trailblazer pruners, and more.

Proceeds from the garden tour and plant sale benefit the community projects of the Gwinnett Master Gardeners. Master Gardeners will be available at each site to answer your questions and handle ticket. Plants will be available for purchase at one of the gardens. The location will be announced closer to tour day. Please check our website for the location.

General Information:
• Advance ticket price is $15. Advance tickets may be purchased until Monday, May 14th by mailing a check payable to the Gwinnett County Master Gardeners, Attn: Garden Tour, Gwinnett Extension Office, 750 S. Perry St., Suite 400, Lawrenceville, GA 30046.
• Tickets may be purchased on the day of the tour at any of the three private gardens. Tickets purchased on tour day are $20. Tickets will not be available at Harvest Farm or Parsons Elementary School.
• Please check our website before you begin the tour for any new garden tour information or possible changes.
• You may plan your route by going to www.mapquest.com for directions to each garden.
• No strollers in the gardens. Parents must hold their children’s hands.
• No pets are allowed in the gardens.

The Tucker Historical Society’s 2012 10th Annual Garden Tour is Saturday, May 19th from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

The tour highlights five private gardens in the Tucker, Northlake and Smokerise area. Each garden offers it’s unique visual beauty, interest and purpose.

Additionally, the Master Gardeners Butterfly Garden at the historic Browning Courthouse will be featured.

Each private garden will have an Artist in the Garden from Tucker Arts Guild working and displaying their art. Artwork is available for purchase.

This is the second tuber sale for 2012 and features dahlia tubers grown in the Atlanta area for sale with the dinnerplate dahlias (Giant & Large sizes) being auctioned. The auction portion of the sale is always fun and you can get some great tubers for much less than from commercial growers. These dahlias are heat tolerant and will grow in our Atlanta heat. All sizes, colors, and forms will be available for sale.

The Gwinnett County Master Gardeners Monday, May 21, 2012 Meeting at 7 PM will feature Danielle L Green, Curator Horticulture & Environmental Initiatives, Zoo Atlanta. Her topic will be: An overview of the exciting world of Zoo horticulture, Zoo Atlanta gardens and its programs.
Danielle is responsible for the development and management of Zoo Atlanta’s botanical collection, including grounds and habitat landscaping, exhibit construction and renovation projects. Her daily objective is seeking the eternal recipe for creating a destination landscape capable of transporting the observer. Danielle also serves as Chair of the Zoo Atlanta Green Team, Treasurer for the Association of Zoological Horticulture, and serves on the board of the Georgia Exotic Plant Pest Council. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology/Horticulture from Christopher Newport University.
The meeting will be held at: George Pierce Park’s Senior Activity Center, 55 Hwy 23 NE, Suwanee, GA 30024 (770) 822-5414. There will be a covered dish dinner at 6:30, with the program following at 7 p.m. You are welcome to join us for dinner but please bring a dish to share; otherwise come for the program at 7 p.m.

Participants will create their own design to take home and learn the basics of making a line design and properly caring for the flowers in that design. The fee covers container, oasis, greens and flowers. There is no charge for the instruction. Each participant must bring a pair of sharp scissors. While many of your shrubs have already flowered (and others, like roses, will bloom again), they all need to be prepared for Atlanta’s summer heat and possible lack of rain. If they have grown too large for their location, they may need to be pruned, at the right time and done the right way. This free class is conducted by the UGA Cooperative Extension in Fulton County and North Fulton Master Gardeners. Ages 15 & up, age on date of class. Held at Bill Johnson Community Activity Building at Roswell Area Park. All classes are free but pre-registration is required.
