The American Hydrangea Society’s 2012 Garden Tour featuring many beautiful hydrangea-filled gardens, will be Saturday, June 9th, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM. This one-day tour will be throughout north metro Atlanta.

The tickets for the tour are $25 each which includes a one year membership in the society. We also offer a family membership for $40 with two tour tickets.

The Gwinnett County Master Gardeners Monday, June 18, 2012 Meeting at 7 PM will proudly feature Staci Catron, Director of Cherokee Garden Library at the Atlanta History Center and the Margaret Mitchell House.
As its Director, Staci Catron is responsible for the conservation, bibliographic development, programming, and financial stewardship associated with the Cherokee Garden Library. Containing over 25,000 objects, the Garden Library is one of the special subject libraries at the Kenan Research Center of the Atlanta History Center.
Catron holds a B.A. in history and Latin from Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia; Primary Teacher Certification from the Association Montessori Internationale; and a Master of Heritage Preservation from Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia. Throughout her education and career, her research and writing have focused on women’s roles in society, particularly as environmentalists, writers, suffragists, labor advocates, educators, and landscape architects. Her topic will be “Pioneering Atlanta Women In Landscape Architecture and Design.”

For flower portraits, the class will cover defining the subject, choosing a lens focal length, focusing, metering, isolating the subject, and lighting. For plants in the landscape, we will discuss how photographing in a larger setting differs from making plant portraits. Working through several examples, we will pay particular attention to how light affects the larger scene, and to composing the image to emphasize what you want to show the viewer. A portion of the class will be spent photographing in the Garden’s wildflower meadow (weather permitting) or the Conservatory.

This class is an introduction to the problem of invasive, non-native pest plants in Georgia. Students will learn to identify the major offenders, their current ranges and habitats, and how these plants impact natural plant communities. Basic management and control strategies will be discussed. Most of the class will be indoors; after an early lunch, there will be field identification exercises, management strategy discussions, and control demonstrations. Please note the extended class time and bring a sack lunch.

An exhibit by members of the Madison Artists Guild in Morgan County will open at the Garden on Sunday, June 24 with an artist’s reception from 2:00-4:00. The Madison Artists Guild founded in 1985 is a non-profit organization of over 150 members “dedicated to the education and encouragement of artistic endeavor in its members and the community”. The diverse membership includes painters, photographers, graphic artists and illustrators, writers, poets, woodworkers, carvers, jewelry makers, musicians, potters, fabric artists, faux finishers, gardeners, and food artisans, as well as people who just LIKE art! They offer a variety of classes and workshops to the community and also provide avenues for their members to exhibit and sell their work through juried shows, exhibits and in the Guild Cottage Gallery at 248 W.
