Join us and learn where the hummingbirds perch and “hide” throughout the garden. Class time will be spent discussing the newly mapped hummingbird trail while discovering tips for spotting these tiny creatures in Georgia habitats. We’ll discuss a few photography tips too. A tour of the trail will be given after the class so bring a camera or binoculars if you’d like! The last portion of the class is intended for participants to have time to independently photograph or observe the hummingbirds.

Join Wylde Center’s Executive Director Stephanie Van Parys and learn to start your vegetables from seed. This class is for those who are inexperienced and those who have experienced challenges. In addition, Stephanie will show you how to turn “trash” into greenhouses! A variety of seeds will be on hand for you to sow as well as tips on how to keep them alive. Please bring three clear/opaque plastic containers. This is an in-depth class and is a part of the Wylde Center Certification program.

Plant conservation is an applied science that draws upon many fields of knowledge from ecology to horticulture, to ethics and politics. This course surveys threats to biodiversity in Georgia and worldwide, examples of rare plant research, techniques for restoration and reintroduction, and ways individuals and organizations are making a difference in protecting the rare plants of Georgia. Class will include group discussions and tours of the Mimsie Lanier Center for Native Plant Studies.

Join JC Hines, Wylde Center Urban Greenspace Manager, and learn how to identify common home garden pest and disease with a focus on vegetables, and traditional and nontraditional ways to treat them. If time allows, JC will cover how to design an at home pest and disease management plan as well as in the field identification in our very own mini-farm. This is a short yet in-depth class and it is a part of the Wylde Center Certification program. Approx. 5 spaces open to the general public.

Sunflower Concert: Grogus

Grogus will play Latin jazz, traditional Cuban and Caribbean styles and funk versions of jazz standards. They just make you feel good, listening to the upbeat lyrics and tempo or kicking off your shoes and dancing in the super-soft grass in front of the stage. Bring a picnic basket, spread a blanket, and enjoy a summer evening outdoors with family and friends. Concert moves indoors in wet weather.

Autumn’s mild temperatures create perfect growing conditions for cool-season crops, such as lettuce and spinach. The class covers: summer vs fall season crops; sustainable gardening techniques; direct seeding and transplanting; frost protection; preparing the garden for winter.

We are repeating the entire five unit series, starting once again with Unit 1. Upon completion of all five units, students will be awarded the Basic Design Certificate from The Garden Club of Georgia. Courses do not need to be completed in order. Participants will be provided a list of materials to bring to class. Additional units of study include Mass Design and Foliage Design, Design for Dining Table, Fruit and Vegetable Design, and Creative Miniature Design. Limited to 20 participants.
