Q: I planted couple of apple trees and this year I have a number of fruits. But I see black spots on them. I am wondering if this is some kind of disease and how I can prevent it. Are these apples safe to eat?.
A: This is a common summer apple disease called sooty blotch. One of my fondest childhood memories is climbing the apple tree beside our garage, hiding among the limbs, and eating sweet “blotched” apples while my brothers hunted for me to help them with farm chores.
The skin disease makes the apples unmarketable but it doesn’t make them unpalatable. Enjoy!
