Black walnuts – Planting

Q: While walking around our neighborhood a few weeks ago, I picked up several black walnut seeds. What’s the best way to plant them?

A: Nuts can be planted an inch deep in a small sunny bed in fall. Cover with 1-inch mesh chicken wire held down with bricks to thwart squirrels digging them up. Most will sprout next spring. Leave them in place for the summer and transplant the year-old seedlings to their permanent home next fall.
