Cucumber – Twin Fruit

Q: I have never had twin cucumbers in my garden before! How common is this? All the others in my planter are singles.

A: It’s not terribly common…but it’s not everyday either. Many years ago you could submit pictures of odd vegetables to the Market Bulletin (aka The Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin) but there is no good outlet for photos like this now.

The phenomenon happens when a female flower splits its ovary (I don’t know why) and both sides of the split receive pollen. So the cucumber develops into two that are joined lengthwise.

They are perfectly edible.
