Dead Animal – Hiding Odor

Q: Our dogs recently killed an armadillo in the woods behind the house. Now the whole backyard stinks. Is there an easy way to kill the odor?

A: I recently had a similar experience. A portly opossum gave up the ghost near my shed and my nose led me to the site of its demise. It was raining, with more rain in the forecast, so I didn’t want to dig a grave.

Instead, I covered the carcass with a bag of mini-sized pine nuggets. To my relief, the nuggets completely eliminated the smell.

My expectation is that the possum will molder in place for a few months and I’ll be able to scatter the pine nugget pile without evidence of its recent inhabitant.
