Fescue Failure – Using Old Seed

Q: In October 2011, I followed my annual ritual and reseeded my fescue lawn. First used Roundup to kill off heavy weeds. Raked, some top soil, and Scott seed this year, and lots of water. I only got weeds. I don’t know what happened. I am clueless.

A: It could have been old seed.

I see on the label that it was tested for germination back in Oct 2010.

If it was stored in a hot place, the seed will die. So with no seed coming up, weeds take their place.

My advice when buying seed is to check the label and do not plant any that were tested for germination more than six months previously.
