Ilex Verticillata – Cultivars and Pollination

Q: What are some good cultivars of winterberry holly?

A: Flo Chafin at Specialty Ornamentals says “Although there are many, my experience is that if you want a big plant, use ‘Winter Red’. If you need a small, residential size, use ‘Red Sprite’. Both provide masses of huge berries.

The pollinators for ‘Winter Red’ are ‘Apollo’ or ‘Southern Gentlemen’. For ‘Red Sprite’, use ‘Jim Dandy’(an early bloomer).”
