Leyland Cypress – Dead After April Planting

Q: How can I tell if my tree is simply browning and suffering due to lack of water, or if it’s gone and dead? I have nine evergreens, all planted in April and one is not looking good at all. I’ve watered it 10 minutes every day for the last week and haven’t seen any clear difference.

A: It is very hard to keep Leyland cypress alive when planted in April, particularly ones this size. I think this one is dead.

The best time to plant them is early October but you still have to water them regularly, after checking the rootball for dryness.
