Mallow – Identification

Q: Do you have any idea what this plant in my garden is?

A: It’s common mallow, Malva sylvestris. A look at the flowers and leaves reminds me that it is kin to the much-larger hollyhock. Mallow has striking flowers, guaranteed to bring comments from visitors. It usually performs as an annual.

You can collect seed in August from the numerous dry pods. Plant them in soft soil next spring in a sunny spot and give away seedlings to your friends.
