Nut Orchard – Creation

Q: I want to create a nut orchard around two existing pecan trees. I’m considering English walnut, Chinese chestnut, almond and hazelnut. Do you have other suggestions?

A: You should also consider black walnut, Carpathian walnut, Juglans regia ‘Carpathian’, and the Dunstan series of American/Chinese chestnut hybrids. You are welcome to try growing almonds but they are difficult because blooms are often damaged by late frost. Similar damage is done to hazelnuts, but try American filbert, Corylus americana. Since your trees will live in the same spot for many years, do your utmost to give them excellent growing conditions. Now is a good time to have your soil tested. Details at www.georgiasoiltest.com.
