Raccoon Damage to Lawn

Q: A neighbor up here in Cleveland GA asked me if I had any idea what might have torn her lawn up. I guessed a bear, but figured you could probably say for sure.

A: My guess is raccoon damage. If it had been in a flower bed, I’d have guessed an armadillo had come rooting in the night. Their damage looks like something plowed the soil.

But raccoons often tear up grass looking for grubs. The fastidiousness with which they pull and lay back the soil in your photo seems very raccoon-like.
