Q: I have a Red Lion amaryllis that I bought in bloom. Can I get it to bloom again now?
A: You can’t make it bloom again right now because it has exhausted its internal energy while making the big red blooms you enjoyed. The process of forcing an amaryllis to bloom in December is begun in September. Growers remove the leaves of healthy bulbs growing outdoors and allow the bulb to dry for two months before sending them to a garden center. In mid-November gardeners purchase the bulbs and put them in a warm window and water with half strength houseplant fertilizer. Blooms follow in six to eight weeks.
