Q: I live in Fulton county and in our condominium complex there are at least 2 river birches (papery bark and at least 30 feet tall, 20 plus years old) that have been “raining” day and night for several weeks now.
The same thing happened last year. The water drips from the branches of the trees constantly. Not a sap but water. Have you heard of this and is it natural?
A: I pruned my Mother’s grape vines Sunday and they immediately started bleeding sap. I commented to her that it wouldn’t be long before I got emails about birches and maples bleeding. Usually the bleeding happens from a pruning wound but sap can drip from fresh leaf buds as well. That’s what is happening in your case. It doesn’t hurt the tree….and because the sap is so dilute at this time of year, it rarely hurts cars parked below.
