Tree – Split Trunk

Q: I went out to my front yard three days ago and saw a split in my tree trunk. Do I need to call an arborist or a logger to deal with this situation?

A: This is a perfect example of what can happen if “co-dominant trunks” are allowed to grow from a single trunk. As the two grow longer, they pull the trunk below apart.

This is difficult to repair. It might be possible to cable the tree limbs together above the split and then bolt the trunk together below the split.

But much would depend on an onsite evaluation of the limbs’ size and weight.

You could attempt to do it yourself but if tree failure would cause damage or incur liability you should really hire an ISA certified arborist to come visit.
