Ground Bees – Controlling

Q: My neighbor’s yard is covered in digger bee mounds. They are now spreading to my yard. I have at least over a hundred in just a few days. Do you have any suggestions to keep them away?

A: I know the mounds are ugly, but it is hard for me to recommend doing anything to harm them because I love these pollinating bees so much. I guess the best thing to do would be to drag a carpet or piece of lumber across the ground to flatten the mounds. Or use a hose to wash away the clay.

Ground bees like to be in the spots where the grass is not very tall. Make a note to let your grass grow tall at the end of the summer, when you stop mowing. Fertilize and care for the grass as best you can so it is growing thickly and is not so attractive to the bees.
