DeKalb County Free Compost Sites

DeKalb County composts yard waste and makes it available to citizens at four sites.

The county gives instructions and hours at this website:

Despite the words on the website, only the Central transfer station is closed to the public.

DeKalb Transfer Stations

Call before you go on a weekend.

Here are exact locations and maps:

Memorial Drive at I-285

Decatur, GA 30032-1239, US

It is next to parking area for DeKalb government offices (it is in area that was Pike Nursery site. IT IS NOT across Memorial Drive behind the jail anymore.) The best entrance to the site is from Northern Ave. It is open all weekend.

Seminole Rd. Landfill

Rob Browder from Precision Pruning gives these tips for getting to this site:

My office is close to there so I drove it and here are some tips. It was open on Saturday morning when I drove in.

Go 10-11 lights from I-285 inside the Perimeter on Buford Hwy

You’re looking for the bottom of a hill .3 mile after the CDC entrance/ traffic light on the right.

There’s a small green sign “Free Compost” just before the road on the right. A sign inside states they may check your drivers license to prove DeKalb county residency. Not for landscapers, homeowners only.

Lightly trim back the tropical hibiscus you kept outdoors for the summer. Make plans for where you’ll place it indoors in bright light.
