Chinese Parasol Tree

Q: Can you tell me where I can go to identify this tree?

A: Why go anywhere but here? Your tree is a Chinese parasol tree, Firmiana simplex. I’m sure you became curious about it due to its huge leaves. They overlap each other on the tree, casting dense shade below. In addition, it has big panicles of yellow/green flowers that appear in July. The seeds and seed pods are sometimes used in dried flower arrangements.

Parasol tree grows rapidly, six feet per year when young, so I would worry about how strong its limbs are. You are welcome to try it in your landscape….you’ll always have a place to stay dry when it rains!
