Crapemyrtle – Sprouts in Lawn

Q: Last year I had a very old crepe myrtle tree removed. The stump was removed but now the plant is coming up everywhere. Many of these sprouts are coming from various roots left from the removal.

Other than digging up every root, which would not be possible, what is the best method to getting rid of the last vestiges of this plant?

A: Crapemyrtle is a very vigorous plant. It may take a year to kill all of the sprouts.

The best you can do is to spray regularly with a broadleaf weed killer (click for sources) or a brush killer (click for sources) or starve them to death by regular mowing.

If they aren’t in your lawn you can spray the sprouts with glyphosate (click for sources) every time new foliage appears.
