Date Palm – Growing in Georgia

Q: I am trying to find out which date palm will grow here and maybe produce dates. How many would I need for pollination?

A: Date palm, Phoenix dactylifera, is not winter-hardy in Georgia. Other palms do well here, particularly windmill palm, Trachycarpus fortunei. It has a tall trunk but the leaves are not feather-shaped like a date palm.
