Goosegrass – Identification

Q: Is this poa annua, nutsedge, or something else, and how do I get rid of it? I have kept it out of my beds by pulling it out but it is taking over all the other areas of the yard and seems to thrive in almost any season.

A: Your first picture gives me the clue I need. Note how the little grass clump seems to have a white-stemmed center? That tells me it is probably goosegrass. This annual weed doesn’t usually sprout in winter but I’ll bet it germinated when the nearby stones got warm.
