Puffball – Identified

Q: I found these under a tree, about the size of a lemon, half buried. They have holes in the top. I cut one open and it had blackish looking stuff inside.

A: It’s a pigskin puffball. The black stuff inside will eventually dry up and become a powder. Then, when disturbed by an animal or even rainfall, spores puff out of the top.
