Tommies – Crocus tommasinianus Identification

Q: These seed things just popped up. Could they be from the crocus that bloomed earlier in the spring?

A: Indeed they are. You have a nice spread of Tommies, Crocus tommasinianus.

This crocus blooms before almost any other bulb, in early February. The flower color ranges from a deep blue/lavender to a pale white/blue.

The grass-like foliage appears in winter but disappears in summer.

Dig up some of the blooming clumps in February and plant them under a Japanese maple or in a woodland area where the leaves won’t get mowed so often as in your lawn.
