Viburnum tinus – Identification
Q: I have a large evergreen flowering shrub that is over 10 feet tall and has been blooming since November. It blooms through the winter. I have wondered if it is a viburnum.
A: You’re right! Garden designer Shannon Pable says it’s Viburnum tinus. This large evergreen shrub has tight pink flower buds that open whenever winter temperatures rise.
The fruit is a blue-black berry seen in summer and fall. The flowers are fragrant as well. The shrub has a round compact upright growth habit and can get 5′-6′ tall by 5′-6′ wide, making it a great small hedge.
‘Spring Bouquet’ is one nice cultivar but it is also sold as ‘Compactum’.
