Fescue Lawn – When To Put Down Pre-Emergent

Q: We have a fescue lawn. With all of the warm weather in early January, should I have put down a pre emergent? Should I also put it down in late February?

A: It’s soil temperature rather than air temperature that makes weed seeds germinate. You don’t really need to apply a spring pre emergent herbicide until soil temps are 50 degrees and steadily rising, with little chance of falling back again. That usually occurs in late February so that’s when I recommend putting out the weed preventer chemical in spring. You can monitor your soil temperature at Georgia Weather.
