have found these for several years growing beneath mature azaleas. The question is whether they are self-seeded azaleas. The area is dappled shade with moss base. In previous years I have removed them, but in a few years they are back. They are not attached to root from ‘mother plant’ as seen in the photo with the root exposed. There are probably 50 scattered over the back yard near where azaleas are growing. The azaleas aren’t particularly healthy. Probably not getting enough sun.

Can’t help with the ID, but I’ve lived in many homes with azalea in the yard, and have never seen any that was self-seeded.
