Notes:

This picture was taken in June 2014 in Kyrgystan south of Lake Issyk-Kul in the Shaska Valley at an alitude of about 4500 ft. What are these brown cones? Cacti??

    The brown cones are about 6-8″ high

    Are they growing near dead or decaying trees or other plants? They somewhat resemble certain parasitic growths called groundcones (Boschniakia) or Squawroot (Conopholis americana) though from the picture it’s difficult to determine the size of the cones.
