Laura, You are right with Melia azedarach. Note to Titiad… In South Africa this is a registered category 2 Invader weed… There’s no loss in losing them altogether… Not indigenous South African either. Commonly called a Syringa tree in South Africa (Not to be confused with Syringa trees of the northern hemisphere)

Since there are no flowers to narrow down its ID. I’m guessing this is either Melia azedarach or a type of Koelreuteria. I’m leaning toward Melia azedarach. You will know for certain when it blooms.
