Without its flowers to help, I could only taking a wild guess for now. Maybe a species in the Spicebush genus (Lindera)? Perhaps the Northern speicebush (L. benzoin)?. Check two in the group from these included links. Again, I’m only speculating. Flowers, fruits, winter buds and photo of a whole plant would give us closer to its ID.
