Notes:

…but no one knows its name!! I grew up in this area (Yonkers NY, just north of NYC) and these bushes/shrubs were everywhere. The little white flowery things have the loveliest scent that – to me – brings back memories of end of school and the beginning of the wonderful summer.

pdstotts yes those little white blooms that MrsB hates produce little dark blue berries that the birds love. Both the Japanese and Chinese privets are considered invasive species because the little birdies are unable to digest the seed inside the berry. Guess what they do with it! MrsB I think the privet battle is a lost cause unless we introduce a genetically modified tastier cultivar that causes little birdie constipation!

Some people find legustrum scent sickening. To me it is the bringer of hay fever along with all the other privets and quite stinky. Plant a sweet olive hedge instead.

Privet (Ligustrum) perhaps? Do the small white flowers produce blue/black berries that the birds like?

I am thinking Ligustrum. Compare to Japanese ligustrum. http://www.walterreeves.com/gardening-q-and-a/japanese-ligustrum-identification/
