This is a mahonia, not a fern.

Leatherleaf Mahonia or by its botanical name Mahonia bealei
One of my favorite shade plants! It’s not a fern and I have heard it is related to barberry. I have seen all kinds of birds eat the berries.

That is a leatherleaf mahonia ‘mahonia bealii’. Not sure what birds eat them.
