Notes:

This tree is in my neighbor’s yard and I have admired it so. Especially the beautiful orchid-like blooms and sweet fragrance they have. The blooms pop from felt-like pods and the leaves of the tree are slightly fuzzy. Walter, can you help me (and my neighbor who has no idea what it is) to identify this lovely tree?

Thanks,
Kim

I am thinking it may be an empress tree. Check out the photos on the USDA link here http://plants.usda.gov/java/profile?symbol=PATO2
Some call it a weed tree because of its rapid growth rate. Better check it out closely before planting one in your yard. Just enjoy your neighbor’s for a few years!

Bobby, thank you for your help in identifying this tree. I am surprised such a lovely thing is considered a nuisance but I suppose I should consider the beauty and fragrance of wisteria yet it chokes the life out of many other lovely things.

I agree it is a Royal Paulownia (Empress tree)
