Notes:

Just moved to Ellijay and we have the holes showing up. They are 2-3″ deep and 2-3″ perfectly round. They go through the pine straw and down into hard soil. Not noticing any mounding or soil left around the holes. They seem to appear out of nowhere!

I keep having something dig in my dirt underneath the pine straw. I keep covering it back up but appears again , a couple of days later?

squirrels. I’ve seen them in action more than once. Those little boogers are either looking for something previously buried or burying new items.

Yeah, not crayfish. They show up in very wet soil… Raccoon seems likely… Try a havahart trap…. Bait with cat food or marshmallows. Or one of these options: http://www.survivalistboards.com/showthread.php?t=400408

My first thought was crayfish (do you have a stream nearby?) but they usually mound. Could be voles.
