Notes:
This large bush/weed is in our backyard, seemingly planted in a purposeful manner but we just bought the house so we don’t know what it is. Should we tear it out or does it have some aesthetic value?

Looks like a hibiscus. http://statebystategardening.com/state.php/ia/hotplants/hardy_hibiscus/ You can cut the stems to the ground, or leave them standing to mark the spot… You’ll see new growth emerging from the ground in the Spring.
