Notes:

This deciduous tree is in my back yard. The leaves look like a picture in my tree book of a Bald Cypress but obviously I don’t live in a swamp so I wasnt sure if that’s what it was. If its not, what is it?

Looks like it. I’ve seen them often on very dry sites. Check this article from UGA http://georgiafaces.caes.uga.edu/index.cfm?public=viewStory&pk_id=1929

This is a Bald Cypress. There is another deciduous conifer that is very similar in appearance but there is one easy way to differentiate the two. If you look at the needles in your photo, they are alternating. There is one on the right, then the one on the left is slightly offset, and the alternating pattern continues. I learned the phrase ABC for identifying them = Alternating Bald Cypress.

The other deciduous conifer is the Dawn Redwood (metasequoia glyptostroboides). Great botanical name isn’t it? Well, on the Dawn Redwood, the needles are opposite each other, thus they grow paired off left and right. See here for an image http://trees.stanford.edu/images/Metaseq/Metasequoia%20glyptostroboides.jpg
