Found in a woodland garden so it was probably planted as a wildflower, in a moist situation.

Thank you, JayinGA. I know the Aquilegia which is native to the Carolinas – A. canadensis. But its flower is unlike this mystery plant in that it droops down, while my mystery plant is up-facing. You suggested A. caerulia, but that is the Rocky Mt. Columbine, generally blue in color. I am now thinking that this is a hybrid of A. vulgaris, native to the Carolinas. Harland

Columbine (Aquilegia, probably A. caerulea). It self-seeds readily.
