Got this at a yardsale in Fayetteville, GA. Hasn’t yet bloomed. Friend says maybe a swamp sunflower? Bugs have been chewing on it a little. Is about 5-6 feet tall. When will it bloom? And where will the blooms come out on it?

My wonderful gardening neighbor gave several to me this year and, according to her wisdom, this is a swamp sunflower and will bloom toward the end of September. She said to cut it back to the ground after frost/dies and it will live again next season. They generally grow this tall. This is my first season so I am in a learning year. dt

Thanks Donna. I can’t wait to see the blooms. It’s right outside my backdoor. It’s still August and it looks as if no flowers are even thinking about blooming. I will wait and see. Good luck with yours. Thanks again!

I agree with Donna.
August 26th, 2010 at 7:06 pmI have a grouping of plants that appears to be the same as yours and have decided they are Helianthus angustifolias. The patch is like a ray of sunlight along about dark. There is a large planting along a fence next door to Burt’s Pumpkin Patch. Very striking.

Shannon, are your’s in bloom right now, or are the butterflies hovering around the leaves? Mine don’t even look like their near bloom time

no, i was referring to years’ past. They are just starting to open. As my black eyed susans are winding down, my swamp sunflowers are just starting to bloom. It looks like yours are in a bit of shade…this will delay their bloom time. So I’m sure they’ll do their thing soon

They are a great pass along plant… So if you have any garden friends nearby, you might be in luck. I did find a link for a place to buy seeds http://www.easywildflowers.com/quality/helianthus%20angustifolius.htm
