this is a tree that i have been told that it is japanese but no google search has come up with anything

   Southern Catalpa. Gran-daddy called them fishing trees. The catalpa sphinx moth larva that feed on the leaves of this tree make a pretty good bait. They can also make a pretty good mess of the leaves. They’re really attractive in bloom.
