This looks like a type of Mallow plant. There are several common varieties grown in the SE. I found this one as a variety grown in SD. http://plants.usda.gov/java/profile?symbol=MASY

I agree with hollyhocks. Thought perhaps hibiscus, but prob. not in SD. Hollyhock might come back in a place it was planted before, even after a cold winter.
