The previous owners of a property we just moved into had planted a row of shrubs towards the back of the lot. Can anybody tell me what these are? Thanks in advance!

It looks like a Calycanthus floridus (common sweetshrub).

Thanks, Christina – I think you’re onto something. I scratched the bark, and there is a very strong, sweet smell underneath. Might have to wait until next spring to confirm it (with blooms)!
