Notes:
This is a plant that came up in one area only of my garden this spring. At first, I thought it was a sunflower (and it may yet be!) but I cannot find anything quite matching it online. It is coming up singly, not in clumps, and each separate plant has an identical tuber that looks much like a carrot but lies sideways 2 inches underground at the end of the stem. If it is going to flower, it believe it will be much later in the year. I had a variety pack of sunflowers planted near that spot.

The leaves look kind of like 4 O’Clocks but I don’t know if they tuber underground like that. Besides, if they did, you’d have had them last year to have tubers that big…

Hard to tell from the fuzzy pics, but I think it might be a Jerusalem Artichoke commonly called a Sunchoke. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jerusalem_artichoke
