This plant bloomed this summer for the first time in 7 years! Can you tell me what it is? Came up in a pine straw bed, mostly shade.

Thank you. We bought the house 7 years ago and never saw it bloom until this summer. The previous owners may have planted it. We do have lots of deer and rabbit activity that may have prevented blooming!

That’s a nice looking acanthus mollis (bears breeches). Are you sure it was a volunteer?

Acanthus: Bear’s britches. They can be a bit out of their comfort zone in Georgia. In a Garden Web forum they are mentioned in a post by a Fayetteville,GA grower here: http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/gagarden/msg050824159099.html A rainy year probably helped but your patience seems to be key and definitely gets honorable mention! It’s a beauty. http://www.redorbit.com/media/uploads/2012/06/acant7_001_php.jpg
