Notes:

I found this on a flowering tree (or really tall bush) behind my house. It has a very sweet smell, almost sickly sweet, and the flowers are on the very ends of the branches, but not in clusters.

This is Carolina Allspice, commonly called sweetshrub. They are very hardy and spread and they don’t grow higher than tall bushes.

Looks to me like it it’s Calycanthus fertilis ( http://www.botanicalstockphotos.com/img7233.htm ) if that photo is a true color. If it should be a brighter red it could be Calycanthus floridus ( http://www.botanicalstockphotos.com/img7238.htm ) but either way it’s Calycanthus.
