Notes:
This was originally a houseplant received in an arrangement. It’s been outside for several years and is now about 4 feet tall – looks a bit like a cornstalk. Just noticed at growth coming off the central stem. What is the plant and the growth and why now?

Looks like a Cordyline. From the foliage it’s most likely Cordyline fruticosa, though other species, such as Cordyline stricta ( http://www.botanicalstockphotos.com/photo-cordyline-stricta-glauca-6964.htm ) have similar flowers.
