Mystery Root

Notes:

This was picked up by my dog. The way the tail was moving while coming out of its mouth made me think it was a dead animal at first. Found in the dirt, dark area. Feels just like rubber, almost squishy, but when cut, it looks like a potato of some kind. The crooked ‘tail’ is hairy to the point that it looks like a tail. What the heck is it?

It looks like a wild burdock root.

None of the pictures I found on-line of burdock root even resemble this at all. The on-line pictures are all of thin roots. This is about 8 inches long and is about 3″ in diameter.

    Possibly a dahlia root? http://www.gardenaction.co.uk/garden_diary/garden_mini_project_september_1b_dahlia_overwinter.asp

To Paula – you may be on to something. Didn’t find any exact photos, but very close. Thanks.
