Phyllis the Cactus

What kind of cactus is this? Notice the height; she has grown too tall to take inside in the winter and she will freeze and die if we don’t do something. Can we cut her at all or do we need to find her a home with taller ceilings? She looses all her hair in the winter. We named her Phyllis for Ms. Dillar!

    This is a Madagascar Palm. It’s not a cacti, nor a palm, for that matter. Cuttings are made from the stem, but I would prefer to do that in the spring so that you have a long growing season. Phyllis looks quite robust, so maybe she could make it through the winter a little bowed over at the ceiling, then cut her back in the spring.
