Notes:

This scraggly tree popped up a few years ago and is roughly doubling in size every year. It isn’t a redbud, but blooms about the same time and is beautiful. What is it?

Bobby & Jim — Thanks for your efforts! My husband took pictures of the bark and leaves (just starting to come out) today, but apparently I have to post them as a new entry. I will title it “pink volunteer 2.” Sue

No I am not sure Jim. The timing of the full bloom canopy fits good with Japanese Magnolia. The close up of the bloom does look more like cherry. Perhaps an early blooming tree.

Close-up pictures of Japanese magnolia blossoms I have found do not seem to match your photo. The whole tree shot looks very much like a cherry tree of some sort. The 5 petals of the blossom do suggest the rose family (where cherries reside). Are you sure, Bobby?

I’m not familiar with the magnolia Bobby mentions. Could you post a picture of the bark on its main trunk?
